About Us

TAYRAŞ was established in 2011 to recover and refine Used Lubricating Oil in Turkey.

Project and design of the TAYRAŞ Used Lubricating Oil Refinery involved substantial international research and collaboration including novel design to develop a new State-of-the-Art, and then transfer it as the world’s Best Available Technology (BAT) to Turkey.

The supplier of the technology is Sequoia Global Inc., an American technology design and engineering company. Many main components are built in the US, India, Germany and the Netherlands, with everything else built in Turkey. TAYRAŞ' own engineering group have built all local works and supervised the installation.

The refinery construction started in 2018 and ended in April 2021.

TAYRAŞ’ founding consideration was, utilizing State-of-the-Art refining technology, to refine Used Lubricating Oil (ULO) to Base Oil (BO) with the corresponding high added value, the Environmental Benefit of producing Base Oil whilst avoiding increased Fossil Hydrocarbon production, and the very low Carbon Footprint of Used Lube Oil Refining.

TAYRAS’ Used Lube Oil Refinery’s processing capacity is 60,000 tons of Used Lubricating Oil per year, producing 45,000 tons of Group II Base Oil. Having built Turkey’s first Group II Base Oil Refinery, TAYRAŞ is an undisputed technology leader. Group I Base Oil use is expected to continue declining in automotive lubricants due to a lower performance, and be gone from automotive lubes in 5 years.

Refining Used Lubricating Oil prevents potential environmental damage from the Used Oil, and utilizes this as a raw material to produce the most valuable of oil products, namely Base Oil. Used Oil Refining thus adds substantial environmental and economic value to Turkey.

TAYRAŞ is the only Turkish refinery which represents Turkey in the European Organizations “Union of European Lubricants Industry” (UEIL) and “European Re-Refining Industry” (GEIR).

The refinery has been declared as “Strategic Investment” by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey.
